In short
An AI career coach is software that helps you plan and earn your next career step. It maps the expectations of the target role, scores your current skills against them, builds a month by month plan with evidence to collect, reviews your CV and self-review, and follows up on your progress every week until the promotion or move happens.
Promotions go to people who can show the next level already
Most promotion decisions are made in a calibration meeting you are not in. Someone presents your case, and the room asks whether you already operate at the next level. Good work that nobody can describe in that meeting rarely counts. Jonah plans backwards from that moment: what the room will ask, what evidence answers it, and which projects in the next few months can produce that evidence.
That is why his plans are about scope and proof more than courses. Learning a skill matters, but a milestone is only complete when you can point to an outcome, a document or a person who saw you do it.
Career ladder mapping shows what the next level really means
The first session turns vague titles into criteria. If your company has a written career ladder, paste it or upload it and Jonah breaks it into observable behaviours. If it does not, he builds a working version from your description of senior people around you and the role descriptions you share, then asks you to confirm it with your manager in week one.
The output is a short ladder for your track with three columns: what your current level expects, what the target level expects, and what changes between them. For most individual contributors the jump is less about doing harder tasks and more about the size of the problem you own and how many people your work affects.
- Scope. Do you own a task, a feature, a project or a whole area?
- Influence. Who changes their plans because of your work, and do they know your name?
- Judgement. Which decisions do you make alone, and which still go up for approval?
- Multiplying others. Who got better because you reviewed, taught or unblocked them?
The skill gap matrix decides where your next three months go
After the level assessment, Jonah draws your skill radar and turns it into a gap matrix. Each skill gets your current score, the score the target level needs and the importance of that skill in your company. A large gap on an important skill becomes a milestone. A large gap on a skill nobody weighs gets parked, which saves months of effort on the wrong thing.
| Skill | Current (0 to 5) | Target level needs | Weight at your company | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technical or functional depth | 4 | 4 | High | Maintain, no milestone |
| Owning a cross-team project | 2 | 4 | High | Milestone in months 1 to 3 |
| Written communication to leadership | 2 | 3 | Medium | Weekly task, monthly review |
| Mentoring others | 1 | 3 | High | Milestone in months 4 to 6 |
| Public speaking at conferences | 1 | 2 | Low | Parked for now |
A 12 month roadmap toward a senior role
Here is how a typical roadmap looks for an analyst aiming at senior analyst within a year. Every month has outcomes and the evidence that proves them, and the monthly plan correction moves things when a project slips or a better opportunity appears.
| Months | Milestone | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Agree on the senior expectations with your manager and pick one stretch project | Written expectations, project brief with your name as owner |
| 3 to 5 | Deliver the stretch project across two teams | Outcome metric, short summary sent to stakeholders, feedback from both teams |
| 6 to 8 | Mentor one junior colleague and improve one shared process | Their progress notes, before and after numbers for the process |
| 9 to 10 | Present results to leadership | Deck reviewed by Jonah, questions you handled, follow-up actions |
| 11 to 12 | Submit the promotion packet | Packet with impact, scope, peer feedback and a plan for the next level |
Your CV and promotion packet get reviewed line by line
Upload a CV, a LinkedIn summary pasted as text, a self-review, or the draft of a promotion packet. Jonah comments inline and scores each rubric line. On a CV he checks whether each bullet starts with an outcome, includes a number or a scope marker, and matches the role you are applying for. On a packet he checks whether every claim links to evidence and whether the narrative matches the ladder criteria you mapped earlier.
Personal includes 10 reviews a month with files up to 10 MB, Pro includes 30 reviews with files up to 25 MB. A review is counted when it runs, and deleting the file later does not hand it back.
Changing roles or fields follows the same method
Not every career goal is a promotion. If you want to move from support into product management, or from engineering into sales engineering, Jonah maps the target role the same way, then looks for overlap: which of your current responsibilities already count, and which side projects or internal moves would close the rest. When interviews come into view, pair him with Nora, the AI interview coach. If the next step is managing people, Grace takes over the leadership side.
Jonah is an AI persona built on common career development methods. He does not know your company's politics unless you tell him, cannot speak to your manager for you and does not guarantee any outcome. Companies that want this for internal mobility across many employees can look at the career coaching platform.
How to prepare a promotion case with an AI career coach
- 01
Name the target role and date
Write the exact title and when you want it, such as "senior analyst by next October".
- 02
Map the ladder
Upload or describe your company's level expectations so Jonah can list what changes between levels.
- 03
Run the assessment
Answer the adaptive questions to get your skill radar and gap matrix.
- 04
Pick one stretch project
Choose work in the next quarter that can prove the biggest weighted gap.
- 05
Collect evidence every week
Log outcomes and feedback as tasks are completed, so the packet writes itself at the end.

Questions about the AI career coach
Can an AI career coach help if my company has no career ladder?
Yes. Jonah drafts a working ladder from the roles and people you describe, then gives you a task to confirm the expectations with your manager. A ladder you agreed on is more useful than an official one nobody reads.
Will it write my CV for me?
It reviews and rewrites with you, bullet by bullet, but the facts come from you. A CV full of invented achievements falls apart in the first interview, so Jonah asks for the real numbers behind each line.
How long before I see a promotion?
That depends on your company's cycle and your gap. Most plans run 6 to 12 months. What you see much earlier is movement on the skill radar and a growing evidence list.
Does my employer see what I discuss?
On a personal plan, nobody else sees anything. On a company plan, HR sees only anonymous aggregates for groups of five or more and never your sessions, files or scores.
Which plan do I need?
Personal covers one goal with two coaches, which is enough for career plus interview or career plus leadership. Pro adds all nine coaches, five goals and scored mock interviews.
