Coding mentor
AI coding mentor who reviews your code and plans your path to senior
Ravi, your AI coding mentor, finds the gap between the engineer you are and the level you want, then fills it with focused practice, honest code review and system design work.

In short
An AI coding mentor is software that guides a developer toward a higher level with a structured plan. It assesses current skills, sets deliberate practice on specific weaknesses, reviews real code snippets against a rubric, teaches system design step by step and follows up weekly on the tasks and evidence needed for a senior or staff promotion.
Senior is a different job, not more of the same code
Many mid-level engineers write good code and still do not get promoted, because the senior bar is about scope: owning a system, making tradeoffs explicit, raising the quality of other people's work. Ravi starts with a level assessment of eight to twelve adaptive questions and scores you from 0 to 5 on code quality, testing, debugging, system design, technical communication and influence.
The radar usually shows the real gap quickly. An engineer strong in code quality but scoring 1 on technical communication needs design documents and review comments, not another algorithms course. The roadmap follows that gap.
| Dimension | Mid-level signal | Senior signal | Staff signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scope | Delivers well-defined tickets | Owns a service or feature area end to end | Shapes direction across several teams |
| Design | Follows existing patterns | Writes design docs with explicit tradeoffs | Sets patterns others adopt |
| Code review | Catches bugs | Improves readability and testability of others' work | Raises the review standard of the org |
| Incidents | Fixes what is assigned | Leads the response and the follow-up | Removes classes of failure |
Deliberate practice instead of random tutorials
Deliberate practice means working on one specific weakness, just beyond your current ability, with fast feedback. Ravi applies it to software. If your tests are brittle, a week might contain three exercises: rewrite a test suite that mocks too much, add a property-based test to a parsing function, and write a short note on what each test protects. Each exercise has a clear finish line and you paste the result back for review.
Practice is tied to your real work wherever possible. Instead of toy problems, Ravi prefers the module you touched this week, the pull request that took three rounds of review, or the bug that came back twice.
- One weakness at a time. A practice block lasts two to four weeks on a single skill.
- Feedback within the session. You submit, Ravi reviews, you revise, and the second attempt is compared with the first.
- Evidence for promotion. Every completed block leaves an artefact you can point to.
Code snippet review against a clear rubric
Paste a function, upload a file or share a diff and Ravi comments inline. The rubric checks correctness and edge cases, naming and readability, structure and coupling, error handling, test coverage of the important paths, performance where it matters, and security basics such as input validation and secrets handling. Every comment says what to change and why, so the next review has fewer of the same notes.
Personal includes 10 reviews a month with files up to 10 MB, and Pro includes 30 reviews with files up to 25 MB. Keep company code rules in mind: paste only what your employer allows you to share, and remove credentials before uploading.
| Rubric line | What a typical comment looks like |
|---|---|
| Correctness | The loop skips the last element when the list has an odd length |
| Readability | Rename data to pendingInvoices so the caller knows what it holds |
| Error handling | A timeout here is swallowed and the caller sees an empty result |
| Testing | No test covers the currency rounding branch, add one with a 0.005 case |
A system design ladder you climb one rung at a time
System design feels vague because it is taught as a single big topic. Ravi breaks it into rungs. You start with a single service and its data model, then add caching and its invalidation rules, then queues and retries, then partitioning and replication, then multi-region tradeoffs and cost. Each rung has a design exercise, a written answer you submit, and a review of the tradeoffs you did and did not mention.
This ladder also prepares you for design interviews. When you are close to applying, pair Ravi with Nora, the AI interview coach, who runs mock interviews with scoring on Pro.
Who Ravi suits, and where he stops
Ravi fits engineers from junior to senior who want a plan rather than a pile of bookmarks, career switchers past the basics, and seniors preparing a staff case. Engineers working toward a lead role often add Jonah, the AI career coach, to build the promotion packet. For teams, engineering managers can offer seats through AI coaching for employees, where HR sees only anonymous group trends.
He is a fictional AI persona built on established engineering practice, not a person with a work history. He does not access your repositories, run your code or push changes. You stay responsible for what ships.

Questions about the AI coding mentor
Which programming languages does Ravi review?
Mainstream languages such as Python, JavaScript and TypeScript, Java, Go, C sharp, PHP, Ruby and SQL are all covered. The rubric is language-agnostic, and comments follow the conventions of the language you submit.
Can the AI coding mentor replace code review at work?
No. Your team's review checks your change against your codebase and its history. Ravi helps you prepare better changes and learn faster, so team reviews take fewer rounds.
Is it safe to upload company code?
Your uploads are used only to coach you, as explained on the security page. Still follow your employer's policy, and strip secrets and customer data before pasting anything.
Does Ravi help with interview preparation?
He covers coding exercises and the system design ladder. Mock interviews with scoring come from Nora, the interview mentor, which is part of Pro or available as your second mentor on Personal.
How long does it take to reach senior?
It depends on your starting level and on the scope your job offers. A typical roadmap is 6 to 12 months, and the monthly plan correction adjusts it based on what you actually complete.
Does deleting a review give it back?
No. Reviews are a monthly usage counter. The count resets at the start of the next period.
