Comparison for HR and L&D
Sounding Board coaching alternative with per seat pricing for every manager
Sounding Board, now part of BTS, sells credentialed human coaching and program software to companies on a quoted contract. If you need coaching for 50 to 500 managers and individual contributors this quarter, at a price you can read before a sales call, AiMentoring covers the layer below your executive cohort.
In short
The most practical Sounding Board coaching alternative for a mid-size US company is to keep human coaches for senior leaders and give everyone else an AI coaching platform with public pricing. AiMentoring Teams costs 12 USD per seat per month billed yearly or 25 USD monthly, minimum 10 seats, and gives each person a goal, a level assessment, a weekly roadmap, roleplay drills and reviews of real work.
Why companies look for a Sounding Board alternative
Sounding Board built its name on scaled leadership coaching. It offers 1:1 coaching for leaders, coaching for high-potential individual contributors, group coaching labs, a mentoring module and a program suite with coach matching and progress dashboards. Its coaches hold ICF, EMCC, IAC or CCE credentials, and it lets companies bring their own coaches onto the software. In March 2025 BTS Group agreed to acquire Sounding Board, which reported about 7 million USD in scaled coaching revenue for 2024, and the combined business describes a network of roughly 700 credentialed coaches.
That is a strong offer for leadership programs. The reason buyers still search for an alternative is cost and reach. Every human session is paid coach time, there is no public price list, and the request demo button is the only way in. A head of people with budget for 30 executives often has 300 first-line managers, team leads and senior individual contributors who get nothing.
- No public price. Programs are quoted by population, coach level and length, so the budget is unknown until the proposal arrives.
- Human time sets the ceiling. Coaching a few hundred people with credentialed coaches every two weeks is a large line item.
- Program cycles. Cohorts start and end, while a new manager needs help in week one, not when the next cohort opens.
- Enterprise buying process. Discovery, matching and contracting come before the first session.
How much does Sounding Board coaching cost
Sounding Board does not publish pricing. Its site lists three program tiers, Expand for internal development programs, Guide for coaching with its external network and Transform for development at every level, and all of them start with a demo. Human coaching in the US is usually priced per participant per program, so ask the proposal to break out the coach level, the number of sessions, the program length and the software fee.
You can budget the alternative today. Here is the yearly cost for a US company coaching 200 managers and high-potential individual contributors on AiMentoring, using the prices on the pricing page. Put it next to the Sounding Board proposal for the same 200 people.
| Scenario for 200 people | Annual cost | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| AiMentoring Teams, billed yearly (144 USD per seat) | 28,800 USD | Goals, roadmaps, roleplay, work reviews, HR panel, six company tracks |
| AiMentoring Teams, billed monthly (25 USD per seat) | 60,000 USD | Same features, cancel any month |
| AiMentoring Enterprise, billed yearly | 46,200 USD (23,400 for 100 seats plus 100 extra at 228) | Adds SSO, SCIM, audit log, DPA and SLA |
| Sounding Board, 200 participants | By quote only | Ask for coach level, sessions per person, program length and software fee |
A common split is human coaching for the top 20 to 40 leaders and AI seats for everyone below them, which keeps the senior program and still reaches the whole manager population.
Human coaching vs an AI coach for managers and high potentials
A credentialed human coach is the right tool for a new VP, a leader in a hard transition or an executive with a confidential problem. A good coach reads the room, challenges assumptions and brings years of judgment. Nothing on this page claims an AI replaces that.
Most of the coaching a first-line manager or a rising individual contributor needs is more practical and more frequent: prepare for a one-on-one, rewrite a review that sounds vague, rehearse telling a peer their project is late, plan a first 90 days. AiMentoring is built around that rhythm. Each person writes a goal, takes an 8 to 12 question level assessment and gets a monthly roadmap with three to five tasks a week. A Friday check-in shrinks the plan after a bad week. The mentor reviews real work against a rubric, and on Teams and Enterprise people can rehearse a difficult conversation in a scored roleplay before they have it. The AI leadership coach page shows a full manager roadmap.
- Pick Sounding Board for executive and senior leader coaching with credentialed humans, group labs and a managed program.
- Pick AiMentoring for managers, team leads and high-potential individual contributors who need weekly help at a published per-seat price.
- Use both when the executive program already works and the gap is everyone below it.
Where Sounding Board is still the better choice
Sounding Board gives you human coaches with formal credentials, group coaching formats, a mentoring module that pairs people inside your company and program software that can run your own internal coaches. With BTS behind it, it can also tie coaching to a wider leadership development or strategy program. AiMentoring has none of the human side. It does not match people to human coaches or mentors, and it does not run live group sessions.
If a human relationship is what you are buying, buy Sounding Board or a similar human coaching firm. If you need reach, a known cost per seat and something people use between meetings, the rest of this page is for you.
What HR sees, and what stays private
People only use a coach honestly if their manager cannot read the conversation. In AiMentoring, the HR panel shows active seats, goals, milestone progress and the weakest skills per team, always as an aggregate of at least five people. Conversations, uploaded files, assessment answers and individual scores are never visible to HR, managers or workspace admins. The security page covers data handling in detail.
Teams and Enterprise include six company tracks HR can switch on for a group: onboarding, manager development, sales coaching, leadership, upskilling and internal mobility. For a Sounding Board comparison the usual pair is manager development for new leaders and internal mobility for high-potential individual contributors. The AI coaching for employees page covers the wider rollout.
Run a 60 day pilot next to your coaching program
Pick 20 to 50 people who sit just below your coached cohort, for example managers promoted in the last year and the high-potential list HR already keeps. Buy Teams seats on monthly billing, switch on the manager development track and invite them by email domain. Track active seats at weeks 2, 4 and 8, milestone completion per team and a three question survey at the end.
If you are pricing other coaching vendors at the same time, the BetterUp alternatives comparison, the CoachHub alternative page and the Torch coaching pricing guide run the same cost math for 100 to 200 people.

Questions buyers ask when comparing Sounding Board
What is Sounding Board coaching?
Sounding Board is a leadership coaching company that offers 1:1 coaching with credentialed coaches, group coaching labs, a mentoring module and program software with coach matching and dashboards. BTS Group agreed to acquire it in March 2025, and it sells to companies through quoted programs.
How much does Sounding Board cost?
Sounding Board does not publish prices. Programs are quoted by number of participants, coach level, session count and length. For comparison, AiMentoring Teams costs 144 USD per seat per year or 25 USD per seat monthly, with a 10 seat minimum.
What is the best alternative to Sounding Board?
It depends on who you coach. For executives, other human coaching firms such as BetterUp, CoachHub or Torch are the direct alternatives. For managers, team leads and high-potential individual contributors at a published price, an AI coaching platform such as AiMentoring is the cheaper fit.
Is Sounding Board part of BTS?
Yes. BTS Group, a Stockholm-based consultancy, announced an agreement to acquire Sounding Board on March 3, 2025, and the Sounding Board website now carries BTS branding. The combined business describes about 700 credentialed coaches.
Can an AI coach replace an executive coach?
No, and we do not sell it that way. An AI coach is a good fit for frequent, practical help such as one-on-one prep, review drafts and rehearsing hard conversations. Senior leaders in a transition still benefit most from a human coach.
Can HR read coaching conversations?
No. HR sees adoption, goals, milestone progress and skill gaps only as aggregates of five or more people. Conversations, files, assessment answers and individual scores stay private to the employee.
Is there SSO and SCIM?
Yes, on Enterprise. It costs 3,900 USD per month or 23,400 USD per year for 100 seats, adds SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, an audit log, a DPA and an SLA, and extra seats cost 39 USD monthly or 228 USD yearly.
